How to Save Energy in Texas this Summer

Keep Cool with Summer Energy Tips for Your Home and Business

Sometimes the state’s electricity grid operator (ERCOT) will ask Texans to voluntarily conserve electricity when demand outpaces the available supply.

When that happens, we reach out to let you know what time periods to dial back usage to help everyone have reliable service. Here are a few simple ways you can help:

  • Raise your thermostat a few degrees, and even higher while you’re away.
  • Run ceiling fans counter-clockwise while you’re in a room to keep cool.
  • Close window blinds to block out heat and keep cool air inside.
  • Avoid larger appliances when possible, especially dyers and ovens that emit heat.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I make a difference?
All it takes is a few simple changes. Adjust your thermostat, turn off lights, and use appliances sparingly during peak demand times.

How far in advance do you know when an event like this could happen?
Surges in demand can be unpredictable. We’ll always do our best to give you advance notice so you can conserve, though in some cases that may be the same day or next day.

What happens if people don't conserve during an event?
ERCOT, the state’s grid operator, could implement brief, controlled outages across the state. In extreme cases, Texans could experience unplanned outages. Periods of especially high demand can also lead to higher wholesale power prices.
