Throw an Energy-Efficient Football Game Watch Party and Avoid High Energy Bills

Football season is here, which means weekends will be packed with tailgates and football game watch parties for many of us. If you’re thinking about having a football game watch party, you can host an event that won’t break the bank and result in high energy bills that may make you regret throwing a get-together later. There are ways for you to enjoy the football game surrounded by family and friends and lower your energy usage in the process.
Tips to Use Less Energy in the Kitchen on Game Day
On game day, you’ll likely be up early and running around getting ready for your party. Your kitchen will also be bustling with activity. The refrigerator door will be opening and closing, the dishwasher will be humming, and the microwave will likely be buzzing. Cooking, refrigeration and dishwashing are some aspects of the kitchen that make up about 15 percent of the total energy usage in the average U.S. home. And when you throw a party, the energy consumption in your kitchen will soar. Ambit Energy recommends the following tips to cook food without contributing to high energy bills.
- Make use of other appliances. Don’t forget about the crock-pot or warming plate that often seems to get overlooked yet they contribute to energy savings. Have a favorite chili recipe? Use the crock-pot. Want to heat up your buffalo chicken dip? Use the warming plate.
- Cook several dishes at once. You can cook multiple dishes in the oven at the same time. Resist the urge to peek inside to check on your food. The temperature inside the oven is lowered by as much as 25 degrees each time you open the oven door, which means the oven will have to work harder and consume more energy to return to the correct cooking temperature.
- Consider using glass or ceramic cookware. It’s best to use glass dishes or ceramic pans for food cooked in the oven because they heat more rapidly. In fact, you can lower your oven’s temperature as much as 25 degrees if you use a glass or ceramic dish and your meal will cook just as fast and thoroughly, according to the Department of Energy’s website.
- Match the pan to the burner size. You want to make sure your pan or pot size is equivalent to your burner size on your stovetop. If the size of the burner is bigger than the pot or pan, then heat will escape and energy will be wasted.
When it’s time to clean the dirty dishes, it’s best to scrape off any remaining food on the dishes instead of rinsing and loading them in the dishwasher, which will save water and energy. It’s also best to run the dishwasher with a full load at the end of the day, which will also contribute to less water and energy being used.
Cut Down on Energy Usage in the Living Room
If you and your friends and family are watching the game in the living room or “man cave,” there are some easy steps you can take to control the temperature and help lower energy bills.
- Block the sunlight and heat. Close the curtains or blinds to keep out the sun’s rays.
- Use fans. Raise the thermostat and use fans and the ceiling fan instead because they’ll lower electricity usage.
- Use the fireplace in cooler weather. Once the weather starts getting cooler in the fall and winter, you may want to use your fireplace to keep your home warm. If you decide to use the fireplace, remember to lower the thermostat, which will help with energy savings.
- Lower the heater in cooler temps. During the cooler weather, you can turn down your heater if you have several people over to watch the game. Remember additional people will create warmth, so you can turn down the heater and save energy.
- Disconnect unused appliances. During the game, all eyes will be focused on the television, you’ll be chatting with others, and enjoying the food. Remember to unplug any other appliances or electronics that you aren’t using.
